Document anonymisation

Redact personal data from your PDFs in a minute, not an afternoon.

Upload the document and the AI finds names, ID and tax numbers, IBANs, addresses, phone numbers and emails. You review the list, switch anything off or add what it missed, and download the redacted PDF.

No credit card. One credit = one page processed.

  • The file is never uploaded. The PDF stays in your browser: only the page's text reaches the server, never the image of your document.
  • Real redaction. Nothing survives underneath the black box — no text to select, copy or search.
  • You have the last word. Every detection toggles on and off with one click, and you can cover by hand whatever the AI missed.

The company's own details stay. Only the person disappears.

How it works

Four steps, and the document is ready to hand over

Nothing to install. It runs in the browser you already have open.

Upload the PDF

Contracts, invoices, payslips, statements, reports. The file opens directly in your browser and is not sent anywhere.

The AI reads and flags

Only each page's text reaches the server. The AI decides which fragments are personal data and sends the list back.

You review and correct

You see the black boxes on the document. Toggle each detection with a click, and drag a box over anything missing.

You approve, and only then it downloads

Before the download you see the pages exactly as they will be saved and confirm you have checked them. Until you approve, no file is produced.

Artificial intelligence disclosure. Oscura uses an AI model (Claude, by Anthropic) to propose which fragments of text are personal data. The model receives text only, never the image of your document, and the content sent is not used to train any AI. The machine proposes, the person decides: nothing is downloaded without an explicit approval, and responsibility for the final document stays with whoever hands it over. The full detail is in the privacy notice.

What it finds

Seven categories of personal data, in English and Italian

It tells the difference between the person's data and the issuing company's: VAT numbers, registered addresses and switchboard numbers are left alone.

Names and surnames

Employees, clients, counterparties, witnesses. Every occurrence across the whole document, not just the first.

ID and tax numbers

Codice fiscale, DNI/NIE, passport and ID card numbers, national insurance and social security numbers.

Phone numbers

Landlines and mobiles, with or without country code, written in any format.

Email addresses

Personal addresses. The issuing company's service addresses stay visible.

Postal addresses

Street, number, postcode and town, covered as one block rather than in pieces.

IBANs and accounts

IBANs, bank details and card numbers, even when they are split across lines.

Dates of birth

Only dates of birth. Expiry dates, issue dates and billing periods stay readable.

And anything else, by hand

A signature, a logo, a photo, a sentence that gives too much away: drag a rectangle and it is redacted like the rest.

Scanned documents too

If a page is an image, the text is read on your own computer with optical recognition. No image ever leaves the browser.

Who it's for

For the people who must anonymise, and today do it by hand

Accountants and payroll advisers

Payslips, tax filings and invoices to share with colleagues, auditors or third-party software without exposing your clients' data.

Law firms

Filings, expert reports and judgments to submit, cite in a brief or reuse as precedent, with the parties made unidentifiable.

HR departments

CVs to pass to hiring managers without bias, contracts to reuse as templates, documentation for audits and inspections.

Redacting a three-page payslip by hand takes 8-10 minutes on average, between opening it, covering the fields and checking it again. With Oscura it is 3 credits and about a minute — and the final check is still yours.

Unused credits do not roll over to the next month. Cancel any time from your account area, with no penalty. The free plan includes 5 one-off credits; they are not renewed monthly.

Frequently asked

What people ask before they trust it

Is the redaction genuinely irreversible?

Yes, and there is a consequence worth knowing. The final PDF is not produced by drawing a rectangle over the original text: each page is rebuilt as an image with the black already burned in. The document you download contains no text objects at all, which means nothing can be selected, copied or searched — neither the covered data nor the rest of the document. In exchange the file is larger (typically 2 to 5 times the original). On screen and in print it looks identical, and that is exactly what an anonymised document should be.

Is my document uploaded to your servers?

No. The PDF is opened by the browser on your own computer. Only the text of each page reaches the server — what the AI needs in order to decide which fragments are personal data. The page image never leaves your browser, and the redacted PDF is rebuilt locally. We do not keep the text you send or the results beyond the lifetime of the request.

What if the AI gets it wrong?

It happens, and it is planned for: that is why the machine does not get the last word. The detection list is editable — every item toggles on and off with a click — and there is a tool to cover any area of the page by hand. Above all, before downloading you see the pages exactly as they will be saved and you have to confirm you checked them: until you approve, no file is produced. Poor scans and handwriting reduce reading accuracy. Always check the document before handing it over: responsibility for what you publish stays with you, and the tool is built to give you the controls to verify it.

Why don't you offer blur or pixelation?

Because on text they are not a redaction. Blurring and pixelation do not remove the information: they scramble it following a rule. If someone suspects a tax code or a date is underneath, they can generate every possible value, run it through the same filter and compare until the pixel pattern matches. On short, predictable data — exactly what this tool covers — it works, and it has already been done to real documents.

So there are two styles and neither of them blurs: the black bar, which covers, and replacement with a label, which writes in place of the data what kind of information was there ([NAME], [IBAN], [REDACTED]) and keeps the document readable — handy for a filing or a reusable template. Either way the original pixels are destroyed, not shuffled.

Does it work with scanned documents?

Yes. If a page is an image with no text, optical recognition kicks in automatically, and it runs in your browser rather than on our servers. The first scanned page takes a few extra seconds while the recognition engine loads.

What is a credit?

One page processed. A 12-page contract uses 12 credits. Pages with no text cost nothing, and if a job fails the credit is returned automatically. You always see what a document will cost before you start.

Does it redact the company's details too?

No, and that is deliberate. An anonymised document has to stay usable: who issued it, for how much, under what terms. What gets covered is the data of natural persons. If in a specific case you want to cover the rest as well, you do it with the manual box.

Why does it say "demo mode"?

Because the payment system is currently a simulation: you can walk the entire path — signup, credits, running out, changing plan, cancelling — without entering a card and without anything being charged. Everything else, including the AI work and the PDF redaction, is real and working.
